Ability Centre is a member of Ability First Australia

Ability Centre (previously known as The Centre for Cerebral Palsy) provides services and support to over 1,700 people living with disability and their families throughout WA.

We employ nearly 800 staff and in any given year we rely on the support we receive from more than 100 volunteers.

Since 1951, we have forged an enviable reputation as one of the leading disability service providers and advocates in our state. Over time, our ability to adapt in response to the changing needs of people with disability has ensured we remain at the forefront of service excellence.

Our vision is for a community where all people freely exercise choice. We aim to achieve this by providing a voice for people with Cerebral Palsy and like disabilities, along with a range of quality services including physiotherapy, support in the community, accommodation and employment services, to address the unique needs of the people that we work with.

Facts about Cerebral Palsy:

  • CP is a permanent physical condition that affects movement
In Australia a child is born with CP every 15 hours
  • Australians under 18 are three times more likely to be diagnosed with cerebral palsy than cancer
  • There is no pre-birth test, no known cure and severity is on the increase
  • For most the cause of CP is unknown
  • CP is not a disease, it is not contagious
  • CP can be as mild as just a weakness in one hand ranging to almost complete lack of movement
